123 - Innocent Electronic Habits

Ponder this. Recently, I began playing an innocent word game on my iPad. What could possibly be wrong with playing an electronic word game? After all, it is not a mindless game like Minecraft or Grand Theft Auto, both of which I've never played. So forgive me if these games are actually mind-enriching.

I found myself, when I had downtime, even brief intervals of downtime, engaging my iPad with this game. This word game was becoming a habit and began to occupy a significant place in my consciousness. Once I realized this seemingly innocent game was no longer helping me become a better person, I knew I had to break up with it.

Breaking up is hard to do, as they say. But with determination, it can be done. If you use your electronics, however innocently, to defeat boredom—as I was doing—know that it may be time to change course. Learn to substitute electronic habits with a dialogue with God. This is called prayer.

It may take time to develop this new habit, but it will have eternal rewards.
